How is pastoral counseling and Health coaching different from therapy with a licensed counselor?
Counseling may or may not involve spiritual topics. Pastoral Care allows us to integrate client beliefs more freely, discussing topics that may not seem ‘safe’ in a clinical mental health setting. While therapy utilizes licensed therapists to investigate the past and its impact on the present, often using methods like EMDR or CBT, pastoral counseling investigates how to think spiritually about your present circumstances in the context of a confidential and caring environment. Guided by Lay Counselors, most with a Master’s degree in counseling who choose not to get a license, utilize Biblical principles from a client-directed perspective. The lay counselor's role is to utilize guided questioning, empathetic support, problem definition, reflection, encouragement, and prayer, where desired. Inner Healing and Deliverance may be a topic that comes up in the process.
Coaching, whether health, healing, emotional coaching, is a collaborative 1:1 or 2:1 relationship focused on practical strategies that can be directed towards work, nutrition, weight-loss, exercise, ministry, spiritual growth, life transitions, or developing greater awareness for improving relationships as you live and work with others.
Advisors: in both pastoral/lay counseling and coaching, we will explore your story, emotions, thought patterns, and motivations to understand where you want to go in relation to where you have been. We may also explore past parts of your story related to your desired goals, but the focus will be on helping you find solutions and determining action steps for moving forward to experience greater freedom and improved well-being. We may combine concepts around health, nutrition, emotional freedom, EFT, and even neurofeedback to take an integrative approach, but it is always client-directed.
